Becoming a Leader

Becoming a Leader
"Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower."
-Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs, widely known for being the pioneer and co-founder of Apple, passed away last year in October. A great man who was inspiring, creative and determined also spoke great words.

I decided to look for a quote from Steve Jobs that I might be able to share with you all and this is the one I choose. I think partly I chose it as it spoke to me a lot, and I will explain why. But also I think it can relate to a lot of people in a lot of different ways.

I think Steve Jobs himself thought of himself as a leader as he was able to distinguish between what a leader will do and what a follower does. Achieving everything that he has throughout his life I think it is clear to see that he was definitely a leader.

This quote is important to me, as I would like to go into the competitive industry of magazine journalism. I understand that it is hard to get jobs in this industry and it is going to take a lot of hard work but I believe that by having enthusiasm, motivation and determination; it will be something that I am able to achieve. In journalism, a lot is dependent on experience, not necessarily qualifications, and also ideas. Although many people, as will I, go through the stages of university, work experience, journalism qualification, work experience; one of the key ideas, that I think is hard to be learned is innovation. Ideas, imagination, creativity. This is what I strive for in myself in order to be able to show that I do have the ability to become a leader. It isn't enough to just have a journalism qualification, but more to the point, you need this imagination and innovation and ability to think creatively in order to show an employer you can interest people when reading a magazine.

I think my interpretation on the quote has been very specific, as it may be to many of you. But that is what is so great about quotes, and also, our minds. That we are able to allow them to speak to us in different ways.
